2010 Ofsted Report

Family Letter number 6

27th May 2010

Dear Parents,

What a week weather wise!  No doubt we are using up all this summer’s best days.  Can I thank all parents for remembering hats and sun cream for their children.  It has made dinner times so much easier as we have very little natural shade.

Building Works at St. Michael’s
From Monday 7th June the alternative arrangements for accessing the school building will be in place.  At the beginning of the school day all children will need to enter via Frenchman’s Walk and go straight to their classrooms.

Reception and Nursery
Parents are welcome to bring their children to the classroom doors off the Infant Playground where staff will receive them.

Year 4
Year 4 pupils will need to cross the Infant Playground and access the mobile via a new path which is being constructed during the holiday.  Children who bring packed lunches will need to leave their lunch boxes on the Year 4 trolleys which will be sited in the main hall during the building project.

At the end of the school day
This is going to be something of an organisational feat!  Please be patient with us as we get used to the new routine as all 300 children at main school will need to be led out onto the Junior Playground at 3.10 and 3.15 p.m.  Each class will have a muster point where the children will be lined up and released to parents.  Unfortunately we will not be able to identify exactly where these will be on the Junior Playground until the morning of Monday 7th July.  Signs will be displayed for you to gather by.  We would really appreciate if you could not visit the main school office before 3.25 p.m. as there is going to be a great deal of congestion.

Accessing the school between 9.00 a.m.  and 3.05 p.m.
If you need to visit us between 9.00 a.m. and 3.05 p.m. the Frenchman’s Walk gate will be locked.  Access to the school will be via the old small car park, round the back of the kitchen and through the school garden.  Please be aware that the gate at the garden’s entrance will be locked, during morning break (10.15 – 10.30 a.m.) and (noon – 1.15 p.m.  If you need to visit school during that time please telephone ahead so a member of staff can be available to let you in. A separate letter will be sent to Nursery parents and the parents of children in 2C.

Congratulations to our Achievement Award winners this week:
Gold - Luke Bennett, Nick Baker,
Silver - Tom Hill, Joel Grenan,
2nd Silver - James Cutting.

Walking bus news
Last Friday, 41 children from St. Michael’s joined the walking bus for all or part of their way to school to celebrate National Walk to School week and they all received a house point in recognition of their participation.  Well done to all those who took part!

We have had a lot of interest from both children and parents over the last few weeks and we are hoping to be able to add extra days to both routes in the near future.  In the meantime, we are approaching our limit of 16 children on some of the days – we are allowed to take more than 16 but only if we have 3 trained volunteers, compared to the 2 we usually operate with.  For more information about availability of places or volunteering to help us to increase our capacity please call Alison Edwards (07969 523076) for the Boley Park route or Emma English (07961 987208) for the Shortbutts Lane route.

PTA news

School disco update
Once again, the school disco was a huge success.  We made a profit of £534 which will be put towards a new PA system.  Thanks to all the children who attended, and to all the parents who gave up their time to help.  A special thanks to Sian Edwards, Sammi Collins, Camille de Waele, Tom and Daisy Hurcombe and Jack Gill for helping set up and clean up, and for assisting with the sweets and water sales for the first session. They were all tremendous helpers.  Unfortunately the next disco will not be held until after the building works have finished but we hope to fit one in for Christmas!

PlayNew play equipment target launched as PA system target is reached!
The great success of our recent events has meant we have now reached the target for the school PA system which is thanks to your continuing support. We are now going to start working towards a new target to buy outdoor play equipment for the older children which we hope will be something along the lines of a trim trail. Whilst we cannot plan this fully until the building works are complete we appreciate that this is going to be a big project and will be using this as our next fundraising aim.

Summer Fayre request...
Do you know anyone with any Victorian costumes?
As you know our Summer  Fayre has a Victorian theme this year to coincide with the end of an era at the old annexe. We would like to have a stall where you can have a Victorian style photo taken, so are looking for some appropriate dressing up costumes. If you know of anyone who may be able to lend us any suitable costumes can you please contact Alison at alisonjedwards@hotmail.com. We would ideally like a selection of adults & children’s costumes if possible.

Yours faithfully
