Reception Newsletter January 2010
Dear Parents,
Our topic for the first three weeks of this half term is “Winter” (ice, snow, clothing needed, making snowmen and exploring / investigating the winter scenery.) If you have any suitable books or resources we can look at or share in class please bring them in.
Dates for the Diary
- Winter Wonderland Day- Friday 22nd January. Children can come dressed as anything in a Wintery Theme e.g.: Snowman, Snow Fairy or Queen, or wearing cold colours i.e. blue, silver. We will be investigating ice, making marshmallow snowmen and much more!
In Literacy work we will be
- Continuing with our sounds work and recognising and writing the high frequency words ( all children are expected to be able to recognise phase two words by the end of the year)
- We will be writing instructions- How to make a snowman.
- Writing a list- Clothes to take on a journey to a cold place.
- Writing text to go with a story that has no words.
- Using non fiction texts to find out information, e.g. animals that live in “cold” places.
In Maths work
- Continuing with recognising, counting, writing and ordering numbers to 10/ 20 and beyond.
- Working on addition and subtraction with lots of practical, hands on activities to reinforce and develop the children’s vocabulary.
For example I have 6 hats and 3 scarves how many altogether?
How many more hats are there than scarves?
There are 10 children and I have 6 coats how many more coats do I need so that each child has a coat?
- Continuing to reinforce the language of size and its accurate use e.g. Height- taller, shorter, tallest, shortest.
Length- long, longest, shortest etc.
Measuring
Personal and Social Target
Our Personal and Social target this half term is:
- I can choose my own activities and resources and talk about why I have chosen them
Each child has a small picture of a snowman with their name on and when they have achieved their target the small snowman is moved onto our large class snowman. At the end of the half term we will send home the snowmen if your child has achieved their target, we will keep the others and continue to support the children and work on achieving their target.
Kind regards
Mrs Elcock and Mrs Lane
