Information for children and parents
January 2008
Welcome to Year 2 Spring Term
We have put together the following information to help you and your child as they progress through Year 2, a snapshot of what we shall be up to over the following term and how you can help your child. The curriculum may change slightly to match the abilities and needs of the children in our year group. If you have any questions please contact one of the Year 2 teachers.Reading Books
Children are encouraged to change their reading books as necessary. To support them in reading they will read twice a week to an adult in school during our Guided Reading Sessions.

Homework
Your child brought a homework pack home on Monday 7th January for the Spring Term. This includes Literacy and Numeracy homework for the
whole term. There is one piece of Literacy and
Numeracy for each week. This work can be
completed at any time during the week that is most convenient to you. Homework tasks will require discussion and activities and do not need to be returned to school. It would be appreciated if you could make a note in the Reading Diary that homework has been completed as well as any other comment you wish to make.
PE and Games
Your child will need a PE kit (shorts, white t-shirt and pumps). In cold weather a tracksuit may be worn outside.
2BG will have PE on Tuesday and Games on Wednesday.
2B will have PE on Friday and games on Wednesday.
Please ensure that all kit and uniform is
Labelled, especially fleece jackets.
Literacy
During this term in line with the Revised Primary
Strategy we will be covering the following:
Traditional stories - listen to and retell traditional stories from a range of cultures, writing mini play scripts, plan and write an alternative ending to a story
Poetry - imaginative poems, discussing own experiences, extending vocabulary and writing their own poems
Information Texts - using dinosaur information to explore differences between fact and fiction, create glossaries and produce own information texts
Instruction - to write instructions for a familiar activity
Story writing - range of themes
In line with School Policy, we will be teaching joined handwriting. We shall be following Letters And Sounds for the teaching of phonics.Numeracy
During this term we will be covering the following Units, of the Revised
Numeracy Framework:
Counting, Calculating and Partitioning - using number lines and 100 squares; grouping into tens, fives and twos. Calculating the value of an unknown value in a number sentence (e.g. ÷ 2=6, 30— =24)
Securing Number Facts, Understanding shapes—solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication or division using numbers, measures or money. Identify reflective symmetry and draw lines of symmetry
Handling Data and Measures— collect and record data in lists and tables using ICT, read the number divisions on a scale and use a ruler to draw and measure lines to the nearest centimetre
Calculating, Measuring and Understanding Shape - read the time to quarter hour, identify time intervals, solve problems. Securing Number Facts - halving and doubling numbers and recall doubles of all numbers to 20 and the corresponding halves, find a 1/2 , 1/4 and 3/4 of shapes and sets of objects.

Science
During this term we will be covering two units of work.
The first of these is Health and Growth looking at food, exercise, good medicines and safety
Our second unit is Grouping and Changing Materials - identifying natural materials, looking at how heat can change materials, recording observations and developing a fair test.
Everything Else!!
History– Great Fire of London, the history of Great Fire and the repercussions, looking at chronology and sources of information (including eye-witness accounts)
Geography– Kenya, comparing localities (we are hoping to have a visiting group into school—watch this space!)
Design Technology– Puppets, joining fabric, linked to History work
Art - Masks linked to Geography work, creating masks from a variety of materials
RE – Places of Worship, as you are aware our visit to Birmingham Synagogue has already been arranged, we will also be visiting the National Memorial Arboretum and St. Michael’s Church
ICT – all of the children will begin to learn to learn to touch type.
This will support our unit of work - Writing Stories, which will involve entering and correcting textTheme days
We will be having a Creative Arts Day in the first half term, followed by a Geography day in the second half. You will be invited in to join us for part of these days.
